Hellmann’s Real Food Movement Grant – Chuck Hughes

February 28, 2012 Comments off

So rock-star chef Chuck Hughes was in Red Deer recently, visiting École Camille J. Lerouge School. The school received $25,000 in 2011 to bring more real food to its students. Along with the new appliances, designed to prepare more fresh and healthy foods, the grant went toward the revamping of the school menu, including new recipes from Chuck Hughes. Unfortunately I couldn’t align the stars in my favour and make the trip down, but I still wanted to share a little bit from Chuck himself (and a recipe).

“The idea is not to take away the foods kids love, but make them with real, fresh ingredients,” said Chuck Hughes who was on-hand to help serve up some of his nutritious menu creations. “People will be surprised at how adventurous kids are when it comes to food if it’s prepared in fun and delicious ways. When I saw the old menu, my first reaction was not to get rid of cafeteria classics that kids love but rather to make awesome chicken fingers that are good for them too. Pretty soon they’ll be asking their parents to prepare these nutritious versions at home. “

For more information, or if you know a group that is passionate about real food, head over to www.realfoodmovement.ca to learn more about the program and how to apply. You can apply from now until August 9, 2012. Why not give it a go. I know I could use a new stove for all the bread I bake for my friends and family…
