This week I was lucky enough to be invited to eat a dinner courtesy of Chef Xavier Perez Stone and Grand Velas Resorts. Chef Xavier has been named Mexico’s Chef of the Year (2012 I think) and currently heads up Cocina de Autor, the Grand Velas Riviera Maya resort restaurant. The restaurant has been highlighted as #35 among the “100 Best New Food and Drink Experiences in the World” by Food & Wine Magazine. The team at Rostizado hosted the meal and as you can imagine, their humour and hospitality added to the evening.
The event was held to drum up excitement for the Velas resorts and spread the word about their amenities and high quality food. It’s no surprise that Velas would host these events in Alberta; almost everyone I know has taken at least one trip to Mexico. Having been to a lot of all-inclusive resorts, I can tell you I’ve never had food like this. Then again, Velas Resorts are premier and very upscale luxury ($700-&1000/night). The meal ranged from foie gras to venison, sea bass to banana mole. It was a delicious experience and really showed a wide range of Chef Xavier’s abilities. I want to thank Velas resorts for hosting the night and giving me a glimpse into the experience they offer.
