Today’s Swine And Dine Brunch was at Packrat Louie. The rainy morning made for a perfect accompaniment to the rich brunch menu. Chef Andrew Cowan was doing what he does so well, putting together a simple three course meal ($30) for the event.
The first course was a Warm Bacon Banana Bread w/ Smoked Pork Butter. Part of me feared that Andrew would go overboard with the portions and have us tapping out after the first plate. However, I was pleasantly surprised when the perfectly sized slice arrived It was warm, it was bacon-y, it was full of nuts, and the pork butter melted into all of the nooks an crannies. It accomplished everything you could imagine, unless of course you like that dense, not fully cooked brownie-like banana bread. But then, who does actually enjoy that nonsense.
With two of us dining, I had the luxury to eat two plates. First, from the Swine And Dine menu was the Braised Bacon, Truffle Fried Eggs, and Biscuits. This really is a case of simple can be tasty. The braised pork belly was soft and crispy at the same time. The eggs, one of which did have a slightly uncooked white, oozed their yolks and truffle essence on the dense biscuits. If you can’t tell by the picture of Andrea above, this dish was clearly the favourite main (Pork and Waffles being the other offering).
The second dish. Foie Gras French Toast is from the standard brunch menu. If, like me, you enjoy bread in large quantities, then this dish is for you. The slab of bread had a nice crust from the flat top and a soft center from the syrup. The three medallions of foie gras were balanced by the bread and the sweetness of the sugars to create a slab of french toast heaven. This might the best brunch dish I’ve had in a long, long time.
The last dish, Maple Glazed Bacon Beignets, were the icing on the cake. Pillow soft interiors, crunchy deep-friend exteriors, covered in sugar and glaze. Who needs elephant ears when Andrew could serve you these delectable balls. Hmmmm, delectable balls.
