Pilots Friend – Energy Drink

The gang at Pilots Friend sent me a six-pack of their organic fruit tonic energy drink recently. I don’t know about you, but I’d never heard of this brand before. Pilots Friend says their drink was developed for active fighter pilots and perfected over a decade by a team of bio-scientists, doctors, and nutritionists. So take that for what it’s worth. Now, I’m not the biggest fan of energy drinks, because a) they are usually loaded with sugar, and b) I’m usually the guy running at 110%, but I’m always willing to give things a go. Plus, after reading the ingredients I thought this might just be a perfect drink for the summer when I’m on the bike.

If there is one thing I love about it, it’s the containers. These tiny bottles of energy are actually pretty cute. Although, as more than a handful of people mentioned, the pilot on the front looks a bit more than an astronaut. I don’t know why there are plastic lids, other than maybe to protect the tabs, but again, this added to my appeal for the packaging.

The drink is loaded with organic fruit juices and natural botanical’s, which is something noticeable when you crack the can and get the hit of effervescence’s. I really loved the rush of ginger and cardamom , two flavours I enjoy.  The drink is certified organic, taurine free, vegan, GMO free, and is free of preservatives and artificial  sweeteners. In fact, unlike most things these days, once you start to read the ingredients, you realize it all makes sense. I think everyone can appreciate that!

It has 56mg of caffeine in a 150ml serving, giving it a similar kick to say Red Bull or coffee. In saying that, I find this concoction to be 100 times more enjoyable than a Red Bull. Bringing them to work for my non-scientific testing,  I found these cans to be the perfect little 3PM perk up to take you through the rest of day. I know not everyone wants to consume caffeine in the afternoon, but it’s nice if your body can handle it and not keep you up all night.

At the end of the day, I’m going to track down another six-pack and see how it works on some of the longer cycling days. I already but energy gels that include caffeine, so why not enjoy it in a delicious, bubbly drink! Hats off to Pilots Friend.
